A man died Saturday after being attacked by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster in northern England, authorities said.
South Yorkshire Police received reports around 13:30 that a man had entered the tiger enclosure at the park. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the man was pronounced dead despite medical efforts, police said in a statement.
"The tiger attacked the man and caused serious injuries," police said. "Emergency services attended and, unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was declared dead at the scene."
The tiger remained in its enclosure following the incident and posed no risk to visitors, police said. The park was evacuated in accordance with its safety procedures.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed a "serious incident" occurred in its tiger enclosure, prompting immediate closure. The park said it would remain closed through Sunday. In a statement, the park said: "The safety and welfare of our visitors, staff and animals remain our top priority."
The man's family was notified of his death and is receiving support from specialist officers, police said. "We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to them at this difficult time," police stated.
The park said it is working closely with authorities to establish the circumstances of the incident. A spokesperson for the park expressed sorrow over the event, saying thoughts and deepest sympathy go to the family and loved ones of the person who lost his life.
