Two people died when a light aircraft crashed and caught fire near Fergus in Ontario's south, authorities said Friday.

The aircraft went down around 10:15 a.m. in a field adjacent to a road near the intersection of Petty Line and Wellington Road 17, according to Ontario Provincial Police. A fire broke out at the crash site and was later extinguished. Both occupants were confirmed dead at the scene. Police did not release their identities and reported no other injuries.

The aircraft was a Skybolt, a homebuilt biplane, according to Canada's Transportation Safety Board. The plane had departed from Fergus's Jorgensen Field around 10 a.m. on a local aerobatic training flight. The board said both pilots aboard were experienced.
