Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have announced plans to merge their respective sports divisions, CBS Sports and TNT Sports, during the third quarter of 2026, contingent on regulatory clearance and other standard closing conditions.
The consolidation is part of Paramount's broader acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction valued at approximately 110 billion dollars that has already secured approval from both companies' boards of directors. The third quarter window runs from July 1 to September 30.
According to reports, CBS Sports president David Berson is seen as the odds-on favorite to lead the combined division. Executives have expressed confidence that the timeline can be met if all proceeds as anticipated, though the full integration remains subject to federal regulatory approval and other outstanding conditions.
State attorneys general have already raised objections to the broader Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, and additional regulatory challenges are expected abroad, particularly in Europe. These hurdles must be cleared before the sports division combination becomes official.
TNT Sports Chair and CEO Luis Silberwasser said there is currently no discussion about the future structure of the combined entity, with those decisions to be made later. In the meantime, TNT Sports has remained focused on its own programming strategy, which includes an ongoing 15-year partnership with CBS on NCAA Tournament coverage.
Silberwasser stated that TNT Sports has the ability to continue operating its current deals and to function as a standalone company during the interim period. Some TNT insiders have expressed confidence that the eventual combination will not be disruptive, citing the existing collaborative relationship on the NCAA Tournament as evidence of compatibility between the two organizations.
The merged sports entity would position itself as one of the largest broadcast and digital sports operations, trailing only Disney's ESPN in overall scale and reach. CBS Sports maintains a strong presence through its extensive National Football League package, which includes Sunday afternoon games that draw millions of viewers. The merger is also expected to have significant implications for Major League Baseball postseason broadcasting arrangements.
