Sonia Bompastor has agreed a contract extension with Chelsea Women that will keep her as head coach through 2030, the club announced Friday. The 43-year-old's previous deal was set to expire in 2028 after she joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024.
The extension comes at a time when Chelsea, the defending Women's Super League champions, have fallen out of contention for the title. The club currently sits third in the WSL standings, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City with eight matches remaining. Chelsea suffered a 5-1 defeat to Manchester City last weekend and have now lost consecutive league matches for the first time since 2015.
Chelsea's decision to extend Bompastor's contract represents a statement of confidence in the French coach despite the recent downturn in results. According to sources, the extension was agreed before Chelsea's back-to-back losses to Arsenal and Manchester City, with both the club and Bompastor retaining full belief in one another.
When asked about her job security following the Manchester City defeat, Bompastor said she would be willing to leave if the club felt that was the right decision. "I'm really confident in terms of someone who is really honest," she said. "I'll be happy to go if they think that's the right thing. But I will never give up. I know football, sometimes it happens, you can be in this situation. I always fight. But again, the institution of Chelsea is a lot more important than myself."
Bompastor joined Chelsea from Lyon, succeeding Emma Hayes, who is now the head coach of the United States Women's National Team. In her first season at Stamford Bridge, Bompastor completed a domestic campaign unbeaten and won a treble—the league title, FA Cup, and League Cup—while also guiding Chelsea to the Women's Champions League semi-finals.
Following the recent losses, Bompastor expressed confidence that her team would recover. "We work hard with intensity," she said on Thursday. Chelsea are scheduled to travel to Tottenham for their next WSL match on Sunday.
