Claudio Spiniak Vilensky, a 77-year-old Chilean businessman, has died, according to Radio Bío Bío. Spiniak was the central figure in a high-profile case involving sexual crimes against minors that unfolded in Chile during the 2000s.
Spiniak owned Go & Fitness, a gymnasium in Santiago. He was detained on charges of child sexual exploitation and subsequently convicted in 2008. He served his sentence until 2013.
The case, known as the "Caso Spiniak," extended beyond Spiniak's individual prosecution. The legal proceedings and surrounding circumstances triggered significant institutional turbulence in Chile, involving parliamentarians, judges, journalists, and false witnesses. The case became one of the most prominent judicial and political episodes in Chile at the turn of the 21st century, straining public confidence in various institutions.
