Dutch police arrested a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam on suspicion of being a member of ShinyHunters, the cyber-crime group that claimed responsibility for breaching the FBI's jobs website last week.
The suspect was arrested on September 15, several days before ShinyHunters announced the alleged hack on September 22. Police said they seized multiple data carriers from the suspect's residence and found a large amount of information on his laptop.
ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen sensitive data belonging to approximately 38,000 FBI personnel and job applicants. According to the group's claims, the stolen information included agents' names, roles, badge numbers, home addresses, and phone numbers.
In addition to the suspected involvement with ShinyHunters, the 24-year-old is also suspected of attempted incitement to commit two murders. Dutch authorities said information discovered on his laptop contained details about two murders that were allegedly to be committed abroad. Police stated this murder-related suspicion is not connected to the ShinyHunters investigation.
The FBI and Dutch National Police coordinated on the case. Dutch authorities said further arrests in connection with the matter could not be ruled out. The ShinyHunters group has been held responsible for a series of serious data breaches prior to the alleged FBI hack.
