Two death investigations are underway in New York, with authorities saying the deaths appear to be connected.
At approximately 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, New York State Police responded to a home on South Woods Road in Moira, where they found a woman dead. Police said their investigation led them to a truck that was potentially involved in the incident.
State police located the truck about 200 miles away in Lyons, New York. When officers attempted to pull the truck over, the driver fled. Troopers deployed tire deflation devices on Route 14 to stop the vehicle. Upon approaching the truck, police found the driver dead.
Both deaths are under investigation by New York State Police and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding either death or the nature of the connection between the two incidents.
In a separate fatal incident, a 23-year-old New Jersey man died after a tractor-trailer struck his disabled minivan on the RFK Bridge early Tuesday morning. Abdulmateen A. Fagbemi was on the Manhattan-bound side of the bridge around 3:30 a.m. when his minivan broke down. He exited the vehicle and opened the hood to inspect the engine.
Approximately 16 minutes later, a tractor-trailer hit the minivan from behind, pushing it onto the man, who was standing in front of the open hood, according to the MTA Police Department. Officers called the FDNY and EMS, who transported the man to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m.
Police reviewed video footage of the collision and found no signs of criminal activity. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the speed of the tractor-trailer at the time of impact. No summonses have been issued. The crash forced officials to close all lanes in both directions of the RFK Bridge. One lane began reopening intermittently at 5:21 a.m. before all lanes reopened at 8 a.m.
