Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's national team camp during the Nations League, ending his participation in the squad after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old forward and captain announced his departure on social media following a press conference by Jesus and a meeting with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. Ronaldo had been training with the squad in Malmö, Sweden, ahead of a match against Denmark.
Tensions began escalating after Portugal's match against Wales, where Ronaldo faced criticism for low productivity. The situation intensified when Jesus kept Ronaldo on the bench for the entire match against Norway, despite warming up for 30 minutes and having been promised playing time in the second half. Portugal won that match 2-1, but Ronaldo remained unused throughout the 90 minutes and did not stay to greet supporters after the final whistle.
According to journalist Edu Aguirre, who spoke on the Spanish program El Chiringuito, Jesus met privately with Ronaldo on Tuesday evening alongside federation officials. At that meeting, Jesus apologized to Ronaldo for the treatment he had received, including being made to warm up for 30 minutes without entering the match. Aguirre stated that Jesus promised Ronaldo he would make a public apology at his next press conference, acknowledging his mistake.
However, at the press conference the following day, Jesus did not fulfill that commitment. Instead, according to Aguirre, the coach presented what he characterized as numerous false statements and adopted a firm stance with the media. This alleged breach of the private agreement angered Ronaldo further, who felt deceived by the manager's conduct.
The underlying tension stemmed from a prior arrangement between Ronaldo and Jesus before the international break. The two had agreed that Ronaldo would participate in Portugal's two home matches. Jesus later changed this plan and asked Ronaldo to travel for the away match in Norway, with the understanding that the forward would appear in the second half. That appearance never occurred.
Ronaldo missed training sessions in the days following the Norway match and eventually departed the camp. He has not participated in subsequent squad activities.
According to Portuguese media reports, Ronaldo could face significant disciplinary sanctions. Under the Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary regulations, the 41-year-old captain may face suspension ranging from one to six months for abandoning the national team camp.
