Max Verstappen finished eighth at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, a result that prompted the four-time world champion to reiterate his consideration of retiring from Formula 1 at the end of the 2026 season.

Speaking after the race at Suzuka, Verstappen expressed frustration with his performance and the current state of the sport. "I am committed 100 percent and I try to keep giving," he said. "But it is not something healthy at this moment because I am not enjoying it."

In an interview with the BBC, Verstappen questioned whether continuing in the sport was worthwhile. "Really, is it worth it? I find no pleasure," he stated. He added: "Would I not prefer to spend more time with my family, see more of my friends, instead of practicing a sport that does not satisfy me?"

Verstappen described his weekend performance as "a disaster." He explained: "I tried to optimize today's race, but the car remains the same. I simply tried to endure."

The Dutch driver has previously complained about the new regulations imposed on the category. His comments on Sunday represent another occasion on which he has raised the possibility of leaving the sport earlier than expected.

At 29 years old, Verstappen is the third-most successful driver in Formula 1 history by wins, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.

The Japanese Grand Prix was won by Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes. Alpine's Pierre Gasly finished seventh, while Franco Colapinto placed sixteenth.
