NY/NJ Gotham FC secured their second National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) championship title Saturday, defeating Washington Spirit 1-0 in a tightly contested final held in San José.

The decisive moment came late in the match when midfielder Rose Lavelle scored the lone goal in the 80th minute, assisted by substitute Bruninha. The victory cemented Gotham FC's status as NWSL champions for the second time.

The final was characterized by intense defensive play and tactical maneuvering, described by observers as a "chess match" between two equally matched forces. Both teams displayed solid defensive skills throughout the first half, resulting in a 0-0 deadlock at halftime.

The opening minutes saw Washington Spirit applying significant pressure on the New York team. However, Gotham FC quickly adjusted, demonstrating the effective defensive game that had carried them through the playoffs. In the fifth minute, Gotham FC briefly celebrated a goal by Esther González, but the play was ruled offside, keeping the score level at 0-0.

As the first half progressed, the game settled into a calculated contest, with both teams making progress primarily through the wings. Possession and shots were nearly equalized by the 26th minute, highlighting the tight nature of the contest. Gotham FC's midfield successfully nullified many of the Spirit's potential chances, ensuring the defensive stalemate continued until the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, the script remained largely unchanged, though both sides appeared more focused on capitalizing on counterattacks. Recognizing the need for a breakthrough, both coaches made key substitutions. Washington Spirit introduced Trinity Rodman for Sofía Cantore in the 56th minute. Gotham FC followed suit in the 62nd minute, replacing Reale with Bruninha.

The substitution of Bruninha proved pivotal. In the 80th minute, she delivered the assist that allowed Rose Lavelle to score the breakthrough goal. The goal shifted the responsibility entirely onto the Washington Spirit to equalize in the final 10 minutes of regulation time.

Despite five minutes of stoppage time, during which the Spirit mounted several set pieces and desperate attacks, Gotham FC maintained their defensive structure. The final whistle blew in the 98th minute, confirming the 1-0 victory for Gotham FC and securing their second NWSL championship.
