Gotham FC claimed the bronze medal at the inaugural FIFA Women's Champions Cup with a 4-0 victory over Morocco's AS FAR on Sunday in the third-place playoff at Arsenal Stadium in London. The match drew an attendance of 7,210.
The reigning NWSL and Concacaf champions delivered what their coach described as a composed and clinical performance. Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós noted the contrast with their semifinal match four days earlier against Corinthians, which they lost without scoring. "The main difference is we were able to get the early lead that we know unsettled teams, and we were able to be more clinical in front of goal, which really allowed us to then play a bit more of a game where players can enjoy," Amorós said.
AS FAR tested Gotham early, creating danger in the third minute, but the attempt was deflected clear. Gotham quickly established rhythm and began to control the match through sustained pressure and quick attacking combinations. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute, with the team going on to score three additional goals.
The victory came despite Gotham operating at a significant competitive disadvantage. The NWSL's preseason had only recently begun when the tournament started, leaving the squad considerably less match-fit than opponents such as the heavily favored Arsenal WFC, who were 14 games into their season. Gotham also competed without their leading goalscorer from the previous season, former Ballon d'Or nominee Esther González, who is on parental leave.
Gotham's possession stood at 58.2 percent, with 8 shots on goal compared to AS FAR's 2. The team recorded 5 corner kicks to AS FAR's 1, and made 5 saves during the match. AS FAR received one yellow card.
The bronze medal finish earned Gotham FC a $200,000 purse from the tournament.
