Liverpool have confirmed that striker Alexander Isak underwent surgery on Monday for a fractured ankle sustained during the club's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The 26-year-old Sweden international was injured in the act of scoring. Isak came off the bench at the start of the second half and opened the scoring 11 minutes after his introduction with a finish from Florian Wirtz's pass. As he attempted to celebrate, Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven slid into him with a challenge that left Isak unable to continue. He was helped off the pitch in visible discomfort and signalled for medical attention.
MRI scans conducted the following day confirmed that Isak had sustained a broken leg. Liverpool said in a statement that "an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture." The club has not placed a specific timescale on his recovery but indicated he is expected to be sidelined for several months.
Isak joined Liverpool in September as a Premier League record signing at £125m from Newcastle United. Since his arrival, he has scored three goals in 16 appearances for the club. His injury comes during a difficult period for the forward, who was left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia in the summer with what the club described as a minor thigh issue. He also missed several matches earlier in the season due to groin injuries, including fixtures against Brentford, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa in late October and early November.
