A man died after inflicting severe injuries on himself in downtown Los Angeles early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The Los Angeles Police Department received a call around 3:40 a.m. reporting a man harming himself near the intersection of Figueroa Street and Pico Boulevard, across from the LA Convention Center. Officers arrived to find the man self-mutilating at the scene. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to law enforcement sources, the man cut off his penis, sliced his throat, and stabbed himself with a sharp instrument. He also attempted to cut off his arm. The specific instrument used in the self-harm was not identified by police.

Officers set up a white tent at the location to shield the man's body from onlookers. Footage from the scene showed pools of blood on the sidewalk near the tent and the man's clothing.

A journalist present at the scene reported that the man bled to death following the injuries, though police did not confirm that detail. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the man's identity and official cause of death.

Police said they do not know the man's motivation for the self-harm or whether he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
