The United States military deployed two additional Patriot air-defense battery systems to Saudi Arabia and Qatar in September to protect critical oil and gas facilities, according to reporting by Axios citing American officials and a regional source.
One battery was sent to Saudi Arabia to defend a key oil installation, while a second was dispatched to Qatar to protect a gas facility. U.S. officials stated the deployments were intended to reassure both allied nations that their essential energy infrastructure would be protected in the event of renewed military operations against Iran.
The timing of the deployment coincides with concerns about potential escalation in the region. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have expressed worry that if the United States resumes large-scale military action against Iran, Tehran could conduct retaliatory strikes targeting their oil and gas installations.
Beyond the Patriot batteries, the U.S. military has increased its broader military presence in the Middle East. The aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group departed San Diego on Sunday and are heading toward the region, with arrival expected around mid-November. The Theodore Roosevelt will join the aircraft carrier George Bush, which is already stationed in the region.
