The National Football League said Monday it will examine New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch's involvement with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein following the release of documents by the Department of Justice.
"We are going to look at all the facts, we are going to look at the context of those, we are going to try to understand that," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said at a news conference in San Jose, California, days before the Super Bowl. Goodell stopped short of committing to a formal investigation at this stage, saying the league would "determine whether we open an investigation or not based on those facts."
Tisch, 76, was among prominent names made public Friday when the Justice Department released millions of documents in compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. His name appeared more than 400 times in emails relating to Epstein.
The emails, dated 2013, show correspondence between Tisch and Epstein in which the financier arranged for Tisch to meet various women. In one May 2013 message, Epstein offered to connect Tisch with a Russian woman. Tisch responded a minute later asking, "Is she fun?" The following month, Tisch asked Epstein multiple questions about a different woman from Tahiti, including whether she was a "working girl." Epstein replied, "Never."
According to emails reviewed by outlets, Tisch and Epstein discussed whether women were "pro or civilian" or a "working girl." Epstein also provided Tisch with what were described as scouting reports on women.
In a statement issued through the Giants on Friday, Tisch said: "I had a brief association where we exchanged emails about adult women, and in addition, we discussed movies, philanthropy, and investments. I did not take him up on any of his offers."
The NFL said in a statement Monday: "The league is aware of the reports and Steve's response. Our office will look into the matter to understand the facts."
Tisch has not been charged with any crime connected to the investigation into Epstein. At the time of the 2013 emails, Epstein had already been convicted of procuring a child for prostitution.
