Portugal submitted its 2027 budget plan to the European Commission on Monday, as required under European Union rules, pledging to comply with recommended net spending growth ceilings and to invest in defense.
Each year, eurozone countries must send their draft budget plans for the following year to the European Commission before final approval of national budgets. The Commission then evaluates whether the plans align with EU budgetary rules and recommendations directed at each member state.
In the summary of its 2027 State Budget proposal sent to Brussels, Portugal stated it "will seek to comply with the maximum net spending growth rates recommended by the Council, considering limited, in scope and duration, the flexibility provided in the derogation clause for defense and energy."
The submission follows standard EU budgetary procedures, under which member states present their fiscal frameworks for review before domestic parliamentary approval.
