Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday sent a congratulatory message to Antonio Jose Seguro on assuming the presidency of the Portuguese Republic.
In his message, Xi pointed out the profound traditional friendship between China and Portugal. Xi said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 47 years ago, the two countries have adhered to mutual respect and support, properly resolved the question of Macao with political wisdom, deepened mutually beneficial cooperation in the spirit of partnership, and closely coordinated in international affairs. According to Xi, bilateral relations have always developed in a sound and stable manner.
Xi said that he attaches great importance to the development of China-Portugal relations and is ready to work with Seguro to enhance strategic communication.
Seguro, a socialist, took office Monday in a ceremony held at the Portuguese Parliament. He was elected one month earlier, running as the candidate of the Socialist Party. In his inaugural address, Seguro declared under applause: "I swear by my honor to faithfully perform the functions in which I am invested and to defend, comply with and enforce the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic."
Seguro won the presidential election on February 9 with 3.5 million votes, defeating far-right candidate André Ventura, who received 1.7 million votes. During his inaugural address, Seguro stated that "caring for democracy is an urgent task."
Seguro replaced Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who held the presidency for 10 years after winning two elections. Marcelo departed the Palácio de Belém, the official residence of the presidency, and walked to Parliament, where presidents from other countries and Spain's King Felipe VI were waiting to attend the inauguration ceremony.
