Portugal's Journalists' Union (SJ) condemned the invasion of Coimbra University Radio's studio by members of the far-right party Chega on Monday morning, characterizing the action as a crime and calling for a public prosecutor investigation.
According to the union's statement, approximately 30 people led by two Chega deputies entered the radio station's newsroom, insulted and intimidated students, staff members, and journalists, and forced the cessation of a live broadcast.
The Journalists' Union described the invasion as "an unacceptable and anti-democratic act" in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency. The union stated that the action constitutes "a hostile act, therefore an assault, which is punishable by law."
The union expressed confidence that the Public Prosecutor's Office will proceed according to legislation without requiring a formal complaint, noting that invading a media outlet's newsroom is both a hostile act and a violation of press freedom protections under Portuguese law.
