President Donald Trump commented Tuesday on the removal of Kimberly Guilfoyle from her position as U.S. ambassador to Greece, saying she performed well in the role but that his administration was dissatisfied with published reports about her.
When asked by a reporter whether Guilfoyle was "almost a member of your family," Trump clarified the nature of her connection to his household. "No, she wasn't a member of my family. She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago, but she wasn't," Trump said outside the White House.
Regarding her tenure in Athens, Trump stated: "She went to Greece, she did a good job, but we didn't like what we were reading." He added that he had not personally spoken with Guilfoyle following the developments.
The White House had requested Guilfoyle's resignation earlier in the day. White House spokesperson Kacie Zakaria said the administration had asked Guilfoyle to step down, describing her as "a wonderful addition to our team" and wishing her well.
Guilfoyle responded to the allegations against her, denying the claims and stating she would defend her name. She also made a counterclaim, asserting that Eric Dittert owed her $150,000.
Trump's comments came hours after news of Guilfoyle's removal became public and following her own public statement on the matter.
