Emma Raducanu was eliminated from Indian Wells in the third round Monday, losing to Amanda Anisimova of the United States in 52 minutes.
The British No 1, seeded 25th, fell 6-1 6-1 to Anisimova, the world No 6. Raducanu's performance was marked by significant struggles throughout the match. Her first serve misfired badly, and she managed just two winners compared to Anisimova's 21.
Raducanu appeared to be hampered by a possible fitness issue during the contest, repeatedly declining to chase down drop shots. The 23-year-old had advanced to the third round after dispatching Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets in her opening match.
Anisimova, a two-times major finalist who reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals last year, controlled the match from the outset. In her on-court interview, Anisimova said, "I think I can be very pleased with my performance today. I had a tough first round so just went out to be fearless. I wanted to enjoy it and wanted to keep the run going."
Raducanu had reunited with coach Mark Petchey on a day-to-day basis during the tournament following her split from coach Francisco Roig earlier this year.
Elsewhere at Indian Wells, top seed Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the last 16 with a 6-4 6-1 victory over Romania's Jaqueline Cristian. Sabalenka will face Naomi Osaka, who defeated Colombia's Camila Osorio 6-1 3-6 6-1 in a three-set match. Osaka required all three sets to secure her place in the round of 16, with the Japanese player noting after the match that she attempted to be more positive in the deciding set after struggling with her mindset during the second set.
