Sanremo will move forward with plans to erect a statue honoring Pippo Baudo following approval from his family, officials said Thursday.
The city's mayor, Alessandro Mager, had proposed the tribute to the longtime host of the Sanremo Music Festival. The initiative required consent from Baudo's heirs—his children Tiziana and Alessandro, and his longtime assistant Dina Minna—before proceeding.
On January 28, Mager explained the city's position during an appearance on the television program "La volta buona." He said the municipality wanted to adopt the initiative but sought the family's agreement. "It would be surreal to think that the city of Sanremo inaugurates a statue in memory of such an important figure and someone said 'we did not agree,'" Mager stated.
The statue follows a similar honor paid to Mike Bongiorno, another historic conductor of the Sanremo festival. Bongiorno's statue was inaugurated in February 2013, more than three years after his death.
