An 11-year-old girl was struck and killed by a school bus in a hit-and-run incident in Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The girl was attempting to cross the street at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Bath Avenue in the Gravesend area just after 3 p.m. when she was hit by the school bus, according to the NYPD. Video footage showed the girl standing at the corner with the right of way before darting across the street as the bus was making a turn.

The 62-year-old school bus driver did not remain at the scene and fled with students on board, police said. The girl was taken to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

The driver was subsequently taken into custody and is being questioned, authorities said. An investigation is ongoing.

The identities of both the driver and the victim have not been publicly confirmed by police. The incident occurred just after school dismissal.

A witness described the moment of impact, noting the difficulty bus drivers face in navigating intersections due to vehicle dimensions and visibility constraints. "She sprinted. She just took off and tried to like, if you see a train coming and you try to run to beat the train, it was just like that. Being that I've driven those types of vehicles, it's hard to see. Because the dimensions. You're higher, there's things blocking," the resident said.
