Spain's government has released official guidance outlining multiple pathways for foreign nationals to acquire Spanish citizenship, with residency requirements varying significantly based on applicant category and nationality.
According to information published on Spain's official public administration portal and last updated on April 13, 2026, the country operates a naturalisation process with several distinct timelines. The standard requirement for most foreign nationals remains ten years of legal residency before eligibility for Spanish nationality.
However, six categories of foreigners qualify for citizenship after just one year of legal residence. These groups include people married to Spanish nationals, those born on Spanish soil, and descendants of originally Spanish parents or grandparents, among others specified in the official guidance.
A separate accelerated pathway applies to citizens of 23 countries, who may apply for Spanish nationality after two years of residency rather than the standard ten-year period. This group encompasses nationals from Latin American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, and Portugal, as well as persons of Sephardic origin.
Spain has also identified a specific category of foreign nationals who qualify for citizenship after five years of legal residency, representing another significant reduction from the standard requirement.
