Michael Jordan 1998 NBA Finals jersey sells for record $14 million

A game-worn, autographed Michael Jordan road jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals has been privately sold for $14 million, according to Hunt Auctions, setting a record for the highest price ever paid for basketball memorabilia.

Pennsylvania-based Hunt Auctions announced the private treaty sale on Monday and identified the buyer as Miami real estate investor Ron Firman. The red Chicago Bulls jersey is the one Jordan wore on June 5, 1998, during Game 2 of the championship series against the Utah Jazz.

That night, Jordan and the Bulls defeated the Jazz 93–88 to even the series at one game apiece. Jordan scored 37 points in the contest. The Bulls went on to win the series in six games, securing the sixth and final championship of Jordan's Hall of Fame career.

Hunt Auctions president David Hunt said Jordan's standing in the sports memorabilia market has elevated to an elite asset class typically associated with iconic works of art. The sale represents a new benchmark in the memorabilia market.

The $14 million price makes the jersey the second-highest price ever paid for a game-worn jersey of any sport. It ranks behind a Babe Ruth jersey from the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.12 million in 2024. Ruth wore that jersey during Game 3 of the World Series at Wrigley Field when he hit his famous "called shot" against the Chicago Cubs while playing for the New York Yankees.

The 1997–98 season, during which Jordan wore this jersey, was later chronicled in the 10-episode Netflix documentary series "The Last Dance," released in 2020. The sale comes less than two weeks after another Jordan jersey from Game 3 of the same 1998 Finals sold for $12.26 million at auction. That previous sale had broken a record held by Jordan's Game 1 jersey from the 1998 Finals, which sold for approximately $10.1 million in 2022.
