Tokyo Metro announced Sunday that approximately 59,000 customer email addresses may have been compromised through unauthorized access to its Metro Point Club membership system.
The company said a malfunction in the member email system was detected on September 20. Following investigation, Tokyo Metro determined on September 25 that the system had been subject to unauthorized access by a third party from overseas.
Tokyo Metro stated it is investigating the circumstances of the unauthorized access and the full scope of any data exposure. The company said it is examining whether additional personal information beyond email addresses may have been compromised.
Tokyo Metro apologized to customers for the inconvenience and concern caused by the incident. The company urged the public to be vigilant against emails impersonating Tokyo Metro.
Authorities said customers should monitor for suspicious communications and remain alert to potential phishing attempts using the company's name.
