Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk won the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday, defeating Russia's Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in the final at the Caja Mágica. The match lasted one hour and 21 minutes.
The 23-year-old from Kyiv claimed her first career WTA 1000 title, the second-highest category of professional tennis tournaments. This was Kostyuk's seventh appearance in the main draw at Madrid; she reached the quarterfinals at the tournament last season.
Kostyuk, ranked world No. 23, will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 15 following the victory, breaking into the world top 15 for the first time. She will receive over EUR 1 million in prize money and 1,000 ranking points from the title.
The victory caps a remarkable run on clay for Kostyuk. She won her second career WTA title in Rouen, France, two weeks before Madrid, and has compiled an 11-match winning streak on clay courts. Her previous WTA titles came at Rouen this year and in Austin, Texas, in 2023.
Kostyuk recovered from a serious injury sustained in January to compete at Madrid. After defeating Russia's Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 in the semifinals Friday night, Kostyuk declined to shake hands with her opponent, a Russian-born player who competes under the Austrian flag.
In the final, Kostyuk again avoided shaking hands with Andreeva after the match concluded. Andreeva, ranked world No. 8, was considered the slight favorite entering the final but was overcome by the pressure of that status, according to reports.
The final marked the first time since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 that a Ukrainian and Russian player faced each other in a WTA 1000 final. After her victory, Kostyuk collapsed to the clay court in tears before rising to acknowledge the chair umpire and the crowd.
