Daniil Medvedev advanced to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
The fifth-seeded Russian won without dropping a set. Medvedev broke Tsitsipas's serve in the third game of the first set and maintained control through the remainder of the opening frame. The second set proved more competitive, as Tsitsipas served more solidly, but the decisive moment came in the 11th game when Tsitsipas lost his serve without winning a point. Medvedev closed out the match immediately after.
The victory marks Medvedev's third consecutive appearance in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals. According to officials, he became only the fourth player to reach the last eight of the tournament in three straight years, joining Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.
This was the 16th meeting between the two players. Medvedev now leads their head-to-head record 11-5. Medvedev is currently ranked sixth on the ATP list, while Tsitsipas, a former world number three, has fallen to 43rd in the rankings.
