Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension to remain England head coach through the end of Euro 2028, the Football Association announced Thursday. The German manager's previous deal was set to expire following this summer's World Cup in North America.

Tuchel, 52, took over as England manager in January 2025, succeeding Gareth Southgate. He initially signed an 18-month contract but has now agreed to a further two-year extension that will keep him in post for the European Championship scheduled for 2028 in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

"I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England," Tuchel said. "It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud."

The FA said Tuchel had led England to record-breaking qualification for the World Cup without conceding a goal and scoring 20 across the campaign. England won all eight matches in their group phase of World Cup qualifying under Tuchel's management. The team faced opposition including Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra during qualification, though England won only 1-0 away against Andorra, ranked 172nd in the world. England also lost 3-1 to Senegal in a home friendly last summer.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham said the extension would ensure the England squad and staff remained fully focused on the World Cup. "We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see," Bullingham said. "By securing them early for 2028, we have taken away the potential distraction of contract negotiations around the tournament."

Tuchel's support staff will also remain in place under the new agreement. The manager had previously indicated openness to extending his tenure, saying in November that the England role had "re-energised" him and that he would be willing to stay on after assessing how he felt in the position.

The extension comes as Tuchel had been linked with other positions, including Manchester United, where he was understood to have met with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France in 2024 when the club was considering managerial options. Tuchel is understood to view the opportunity to manage England at a home European Championship as a once-in-a-lifetime prospect.

The former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich manager will now lead England through both the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 European Championship before his contract expires.
