A U.S. Secret Service agent on former first lady Jill Biden's detail sustained a non-life-threatening injury Friday morning after a negligent discharge of his service weapon.

A U.S. Secret Service agent on former first lady Jill Biden's detail shot himself in the leg by mistake Friday morning at Philadelphia International Airport, the agency announced.

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. during a protective assignment. The agent sustained a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon, according to a Secret Service statement. The shooting took place near the American Airlines departures area at Terminal C, with police tape reported around a black Chevy Suburban with its trunk and front passenger side door open.

Biden was not present at the time of the incident and was not near the agent when the shooting occurred. No other individuals were injured. The agency said there was no impact to the protectee's movement.

The agent was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where doctors evaluated him. He was listed in stable condition at the hospital.

The Secret Service's Office of Professional Responsibility will investigate the negligent discharge. A Secret Service spokesperson said the agency was grateful for law enforcement and public safety partners who provided medical assistance at the scene.

According to reporting, Biden had attended the opening of an off-Broadway play called "Public Charge" on Wednesday, written by a former diplomat and former chief of staff to the first lady.
