President Donald Trump's signature will appear on US dollar bills later this year, the Treasury Department announced Thursday, marking an unprecedented change to the nation's currency.
Trump is set to become the first sitting US president to have his signature on legal tender. The signature will appear alongside that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and will replace the signature of the US treasurer, whose name has been on currency for more than a century.
The Treasury Department said the change is being made to honor America's 250th anniversary, also known as the Semiquincentennial. The first $100 bills bearing Trump's and Bessent's signatures will be printed in June, with other denominations to follow in subsequent months.
"There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial," Bessent said in a statement.
Treasurer Brandon Beach added: "Printing his signature on the American currency is not only appropriate, but also well deserved."
Historically, US banknotes have carried the signatures of Treasury officials rather than the president. The removal of the treasurer's signature from currency represents the first such change since 1861.
Trump's likeness is also appearing on a coin to mark America 250. The administration has pursued a series of moves to associate Trump's name with government programs and public buildings.
