U.S. First Lady Melania Trump acted as a mediator in securing an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to reunite six Ukrainian children with their families, the White House announced today.
The agreement marks the fourth time Trump has facilitated the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia. According to the White House statement, the six Ukrainian minors currently in the Russian Federation will return to their families in Ukraine. An additional child is expected to be handed over to relatives later this month.
"Specifically, six Ukrainian minors currently domiciled in the Russian Federation will return to their families in their homeland nation, Ukraine," the White House statement said.
Trump noted that reunifying children with their loved ones remains one of the most important global issues. She expressed hope for continued cooperation between Russia and Ukraine in this direction.
The mediation effort continues Trump's ongoing work on family reunification stemming from Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. In February, Trump facilitated the return of Ukrainian children for the third time, stating at that point that she had been "working strategically with both nations."
In her February statement, Trump said she appreciated that Russia and Ukraine were dedicated to bringing back children displaced because of the conflict. "Although all parties are cooperating and our communications remain robust, I urge Russia and Ukraine to intensify their efforts to ensure the safe return of every child to their families and guardians," she said at that time.
Trump and her representative have continued to negotiate with both countries on the matter. Following today's announcement, she reiterated her commitment to the issue, expressing confidence that additional progress would follow the current agreement.
