Queen Sonja of Norway has been officially removed from the royal house following the death of her husband King Harald, according to changes made to the Norwegian court's official website.
The 89-year-old former queen is no longer listed as a member of the reigning royal house. Instead, her portrait now appears in a category labeled "extended royal family" on the court's internet pages, Norwegian media reported Monday.
Sonja has also lost the title "Majesty" following Harald's death. The court website now defines the royal house as comprising only the reigning monarch, their spouse, and the next in line to the throne from subsequent generations along with their spouses.
Under this definition, the current royal house consists of King Haakon VIII, 53, who succeeded Harald; Queen Mette-Marit, 53, Haakon's wife; and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 22. The website explains that while the term "royal family" encompasses the broader extended family, the "royal house" refers specifically to the active line of succession and their immediate partners.
